PAHAR GANJ, DELHI

Slow, sporadic, and somewhat inconvenient, the internet access from Gulmarg frustrated my effort to regularly write to this blog, so the post submissions dwindled to little more than topic headers and too few pictures (camera failure, second day at Gulmarg). Please re-visit the posts from 8 February to the present as they are being updated.

The main bazaar of Pahar Ganj takes me back twenty years to other Asian tourist ghettos – central Bangkok’s Khao San Road, the motorcade-like steeplechase of Kuta, north of Bali’s airport, and the thronging district of Thamel, Kathmandu.

The Anoop Hotel, with clean and basic rooms for 500 INR per room/night is a good value, and the rooftop terrace is really pleasant. It is a long taxi ride from the airport (250 INR), more so in smoggy afternoon traffic, but the Pahar Ganj hotel district has all the travellers needs, and it is located directly across from the fully inhabited New Delhi Railway Station, north of Connaught Place.
